Teaching by Degrees

First Degee Board by J Bowring 1891

Masons learn through a series of lessons, or Degrees, which teach the great lessons of life using symbols of operative masonry to reinforce the message.

The first three degrees are called Entered Apprentice Mason, Fellow Craft Mason, and Master Mason - the names also being taken from the craft guilds of operative masons.

The teachings reinforce the importance of honor and integrity, of being a person on whom others can rely, of being trusting and trustworthy, of understanding that you have a spiritual as well as physical or animal nature, of the importance of self-control, of knowing how to love and be loved, and of knowing how to keep confidential what others tell you so that they can confide in a friend without fear.
